Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative you breathe through a small mask over your nose. It helps you feel relaxed within minutes and wears off quickly once the mask comes off. It can be used for many types of visits, even cleanings.

Oral sedation

For deeper anxiety or longer appointments, your dentist may prescribe a sedative pill to take before your visit. You stay awake and able to respond, but you feel much calmer. Because the effects last a while, you will need someone to drive you to and from the appointment.

Is sedation safe for me?

Before recommending sedation, your dentist reviews your health history and any medicines you take. Tell us about allergies, health conditions, pregnancy and anything else you are concerned about. We will explain how to prepare and what to expect afterward.

Who might consider sedation

Sedation can help people who feel strong anxiety about dental care, have a sensitive gag reflex, have trouble sitting still for long periods, or need several treatments done in one visit. It can also help if past visits were hard for you. There is no wrong reason to ask about it.

Getting ready for your visit

If you plan to use oral sedation, follow the instructions your dentist gives you about eating, drinking and timing your medicine. Wear comfortable clothes, bring your list of medicines, and arrange your ride ahead of time. If you feel unwell on the day of your visit, call us so we can decide together whether to reschedule.

Comfort beyond sedation

Sedation is only one piece. We take time to explain each step, agree on a signal to pause, and check on you throughout. Many anxious patients tell us that simply knowing they are in control makes the biggest difference.

Common questions

Will I be asleep?

Can I drive after sedation?

Is sedation only for big procedures?

No. Some patients use nitrous oxide for cleanings and fillings. Ask what makes sense for your visit.

Coverage varies by plan. Our team can check your benefits and explain any cost before your visit.
